Tree sap, caked dirt, sand, and small leaves and twigs […]
Tree sap, caked dirt, sand, and small leaves and twigs can all appear on the surface of a camping tent after use. These may have been brought in by someone in the tent. The more people use the tent, the dirtier it gets, which is where family tents tend to be dirtier. Therefore, dirt and debris must be removed immediately, even before you pack your tent and go home. However, for regular maintenance, you will also need to clean your tent after each trip. Taking care of a tent requires a certain level of cleaning, proofing, and maintenance.
Cleaning means removing debris and grime that may have accumulated from your previous camping trips. First, choose a sunny day during which you can clean your tent. It is important to allow the Tent Fabric to air dry after cleaning. For a more thorough cleaning, set up the tent as you would on a camping trip so you can clean it from the inside out. Sweep away dry dirt, if any. Then, dip a large sponge in a bucket of soapy warm water and squeeze out the excess. Wipe all surfaces of the camping tent repeatedly until all visible dirt and stains are removed. If something is dry on the surface, don't wipe it off with a sharp object; soften it with soapy water first, then gently wipe it off. After that, hose off the foam and let the tent dry.
Another great way to take care of Tent Fabric is through proofing where you will spray the tent with a protective chemical solution that will penetrate the fabric for added protection from the elements. Proofing a large family tent can take some time, so it's a good idea to plan a free schedule before that. After the tent is thoroughly dry after cleaning, fill the sprayer with a general purpose protector and adjust the nozzle to ensure an even coating; a coarse spray is preferred over a fine mist. Next, spray the entire tent, including the seams and corners. Remember, the goal is to wet the tent fabric, but not soak it with water. After spraying all surfaces, let it dry for 24 hours to allow the silicone to "cure".
